Helping a plant acclimate, indoor or outdoor?
The idea of bonsai is to recreate some of nature’s most stunning and beautiful effects (shapes) on trees which are reduced in scale. Bonsai is an outdoor activity; trees grown are outdoor plants, putting them into pots does not
transform them into indoor plants; with very few exceptions, if you keep your bonsai indoors they will die.
Tropical bonsai trees are native to the warm, tropical climates of the earth; they will do well indoors at a minimum temperature of 58 to 60 F and like warmer day temperatures of 65 to 85 F. Tropical bonsai may be placed outside during the summer months in light to moderate shade as long as the minimum temperature is above 58 F. It becomes a real problem when moving to a colder area; and these temperature changes could damage your beloved tree.
Subtropical bonsai, have little if any dormancy requirements. In colder areas they drop their leaves, go dormant and act like deciduous trees. In milder, non-freezing environments, they are evergreen and exhibit continuous growth except for occasional ‘quiescence’. They require fairly high light levels
and that will be the most difficult factor to maintain.
Temperate bonsai are trees that are native to climates that have four seasons. In addition to proper watering technique, temperate trees need to feel the change of the seasons.
Either we are talking for tropical, subtropical zone, or any other, each tree species, is accommodated with their natural environment, any slight change will affect their’s health; when moving to a new area, your bonsai needs to acclimate to the new growing conditions.
• Allow some time for your tree to acclimate to its new environment by giving it only morning sun for a while, slowly moving it to a brighter location suitable for the species.
• Dormant deciduous plants may be placed in full sun, or over wintered in the dark if they need to be protected from freezing.
Obs.
In order to acclimate a bonsai tree to the new conditions, you should proceed gradually, by moving it from normal conditions to new conditions for a short period of time, to larger period of time, until your bonsai is fully acclimated to the new conditions.
