Watering – how often to water?

A very often-asked question is “how often should I water my bonsai”.
Unfortunately, there is no simple and clear answer. How often you should water a bonsai tree depends on several different variables: what type of tree is it, what time of year is it, where is your tree kept, where do you live, and more than a few others. Watering bonsai is a constant balance between too much and too little.
The “best” way to water is to first wet the soil a little, this will improve the soil’s ability to absorb a larger volume of water, and then you should water thoroughly until the soil is saturated. Make certain that the entire soil mass gets wet - every time - you water and wait for the excess to run out of the drainage holes to be sure.

Providing a dormant period

Dormant period represent the period when little or no growth occurs; usually late autumn and throughout the winter months.
During the winter month’s temperate bonsai, is better to be kept in a spot with the night temperature between 28F and 55F for a minimum of 2 to 3 months. This will provide a dormant, or rest, period that all temperate plants require. If the temperature is always below 45F the trees will remain fully dormant and will not require light during the dormant period.
During winter season, the plants will go dormant; once the tree has become fully dormant, with no leaves or new swelling buds; it can be moved into its winter bed.

Lighting techniques

Providing the correct amount of light for your bonsai tree is a very important aspect for keeping it healthy.
However, there are no simple answers as to how much light bonsai trees in general “require”; generally, light requirements are specific to the type of tree and are dependent also upon specific variations in the location they are kept. It depends if the bonsai tree has light in the morning or in the afternoon, is he can shade or not; how much is the bonsai kept in sun, is it artificial light or not; what species of plants your bonsai is—etc.
Sunlight is by far the best type of light for bonsai trees (this observation match to most other living creatures on earth). Following this consideration, for indoor bonsai, best spot for your bonsai is the brightest window in your home. But is this window is located near the fireplace, or an intense source of heat this could be the worse place for your bonsai (so it is a must to find an alternative to this and to rich equilibrium for your bonsai tree).
