How to create optimum growth conditions
Bonsai trees are planted in pots, this will limit the space and bonsai care becomes very difficult - the shallow containers limit the expanse of the root system and make proper watering practically an art in itself.
The “optimum growth conditions†are different from specie to specie; some species can handle periods of relative dryness, others require near-constant moisture.
• Watering too frequently or allowing the soil to remain soggy can promote fungal infections and “root rot”.
• Sun, heat and wind exposure can cause the bonsai tree to dry to the point of drought, so the soil moisture should be monitored daily and water given always when needed.
• If some of the soil washes out during watering, it must be replaced with a bonsai-specific soil mix, not potting soil, water must be free to drain each time the tree is watered, which is why Bonsai pots have a hole in the bottom. If the tree stands in water it will become water logged and it will die quite soon after that.
• Too little water can damage the bonsai tree as the excess of water can damage also.
The “optimum growth conditions†are depending on some more facts:
• Watering - this depends what type of tree is it, what time of year is it, where is your tree kept, where do you live, and more
Obs: The “best†time to water is arguably early in the morning, before your bonsai begins its day of photosynthetic activities.
• Soil; the quality of soil and soil fertilization (regular dose of fertilizer)
• Light - Providing the correct amount of light for your bonsai tree is a very important aspect for keeping it healthy; generally, light requirements are specific to the type of tree and are dependent also upon specific variations in the location they are kept.
• Humidity — it is a very important aspect — different for indoor, ant outdoor bonsai.
• Temperature - varies from different species to others - during winter months it is vital that you keep your new indoor bonsai warm — Not Hot — but warm, somewhere between 50 and 70 degrees F. It depends by your bonsai native conditions.
• Air circulation — photosynthesis process requires an unrestricted exchange of fresh air and stagnate environmental conditions.
