Bonsai Trees Care

An important aspect when you are dealing with bonsai tree is the soil, the quality of soil and soil fertilization. It is an important aspect, but here the opinions differ very much: Some promote the use of organic fertilizers to augment an essentially inorganic soil mix, while others will use chemical fertilizers freely.

Bonsai “soil” is a mixture of organic and inorganic compounds that provide a suitable growing media for the cultivation of bonsai trees within the confines of a bonsai container. A bonsai container or pot is an unnatural and restrictive environment that, consequentially, requires a very well draining soil mix to
maintain a healthy bonsai tree.
Container soils which contain little or no clay or native soil, are mandatory to be fertilized regularly to overcome this deficiency. Also, soilless mixes (those that contain no native earth), will usually be deficient in trace elements, and these will have to be added in some manner.

The soil around over fertilized plants, trees can be “leached” clean by large quantities of fresh water (sometimes distilled) used to “wash” the soil. Areas of extremely high rainfall sometimes lose the nutrients from the soil by natural “leaching”.

The plants are over fertilized, and the rich solution in the soil is retaining the water. This is not allowing the plants to draw the water from the soil. In addition, some bloom fertilizers are very acidic and lock up other nutrients so they are unavailable to plants.
Stop fertilizing and rinse out the planting medium using room temperature water. Many of the excess nutrients will dissolve in the water and be carried outside the container. Once the plants have recovered, start fertilizing again, using moderation. Make sure to use a more balanced fertilizer. Flowering formula fertilizers with high phosphorous are acidic. A balanced flowering formula uses potassium to balance the acidity.
